Successful implementation of permaculture in Arusha:

An Australian non-profit organization, FoodWaterShelter, has been developing a permaculture program in the city of Arusha by offering residents a two-week Permaculture Design Certificate training course. It has been met with enthusiasm and has been gaining momentum in the last two short years.

With the knowledge that permaculture design principles provide, people become truly empowered. — Geoff Lawton, 2007

The shift away from the antiquated ideals of the past towards creating sustainable, viable systems is definitely a move in the right direction. Poignantly quoted here:

People are looking towards innovative and creative problem solving to reduce overheads and operational expenses usually maintained through overseas donations and aid. Permaculture provides a viable, practical model for development in contrast to conventional donor aid, which is heavily criticised for actually increasing poverty and food insecurity, whilst reducing economic growth in many African countries

These programs have improved food security, enabled livestock and land expansion, empowered people without formal education, allowed women to become stronger entrepreneurs, improved health, and have increased household incomes.
