It's not everyday you get the opportunity to face a design challenge in another country, must less one as interesting as Tanzania. As a designer, I would like to do more than just a stylization of products and focus on the consideration of a deeper aspect for the end user through collaboration. I'm excited to look into the opportunities of micro-entrperises in Tanzania and hopefully be able to give back even just half as much as I'll learn throughout this experience.

This project presents a great opportunity for knowledge exchange and learning about new design practices. I'd like to use my skills as a designer to create meaningful and useful products that create value and improve people's lives. My areas interest for this project are improving water use in agriculture, as well as educational play spaces. I'm excited to research these areas and put the knowledge to use.

I'm excited to work with TEMBO and the people of Longido to design an innovative project to empower the people of Longido and work towards access to clean water. This will require innovation on the parts of all involved parties and a lot of hard work but I think together we can do it. Another cool aspect of the project is the multi-disciplinary work going on within Carleton; involving environmental engineers, business students, and industrial designers.

This project has shifted my perspective on designing for other cultures. This, coupled with the interdisciplinary insights from Environmental Engineers and Business students presents the perfect environment for launching far richer and more interesting solutions. Specifically, I would like to focus on creating permaculture innovations that can cultivate a self-sustaining system within the Longido community, encouraging growth and opportunity in other areas as well as agriculture.

I feel that as a designer, we should be designing WITH the user instead of FOR the designer and this project is a great opportunity to get off our clouds and back to earth and co-design something collaborative, meaningful, and useful at a deeper level. I hope to design a sustainable product that helps with micro-enterprises through the abundant resources they currently have.

This project provides an opportunity to innovate at a grass roots level. It is, however,  a challenge designing with a culture I have a very limited understanding off. I aim to learn about the culture and use the technology of today to help them maintain their cultural heritage.
